Junior Vasquez, born Donald Gregory Mattern in 1949, is a legendary American DJ, producer, and remixer whose influence shaped the sound of New York’s club scene from the 1980s onward. Originally aspiring to be a fashion designer, Vasquez moved to NYC and found his calling in music, inspired by the iconic DJ Larry Levan. He adopted the name “Junior Vasquez” to reflect the vibrant Latino culture of the city’s nightlife.
He co-founded the famed Sound Factory, where his marathon sets became the stuff of legend. Vasquez’s remix work spans pop royalty—Madonna, Whitney Houston, Janet Jackson, and Prince—infusing their hits with his signature tribal house sound. His underground releases under the alias Ellis D, including “Work This Pussy,” became queer anthems and club staples.
Known for his bold style and sonic innovation, Vasquez helped define the golden era of club culture. His influence continues to echo through dance music, and his legacy remains a cornerstone of LGBTQ+ nightlife history.
