Darren Allison (born May 1968, Stakeford, Northumberland, England) is a highly accomplished British record producer, studio engineer, and musician whose career has spanned decades and genres. Known for his versatility and innovative approach, Allison has worked with a wide range of artists, contributing to some of the most iconic albums in music history.
Allison began his career training at Ezee Studios, where he assisted on sessions with legendary artists such as Robert Plant and Tina Turner, including her Foreign Affair album. He also worked on projects with Propaganda, Jesus Jones, and Dave Stewart, gaining valuable experience that would shape his career. In 1990, he joined The Church Studios, where he worked for five years as an in-house engineer, collaborating on numerous projects with Dave Stewart, including Dave Stewart & The Spiritual Cowboys, Honest, and Greetings from the Gutter.
One of Allison’s most notable achievements is his work with The Divine Comedy. He co-produced their critically acclaimed debut album Liberation on a modest budget, followed by the equally well-received Promenade. He went on to produce their third album, Casanova, which featured three Top 20 singles: “Something For The Weekend,” “The Frog Princess,” and “Becoming More Like Alfie.” These albums cemented Allison’s reputation as a producer capable of bringing out the best in artists.
Allison’s engineering and production credits extend to a diverse array of artists and genres. He co-produced and engineered tracks on Spiritualized’s acclaimed album Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space, worked on tracks for Skunk Anansie, and produced material for Babybird, The Josephs, and Ben Christophers. His work also includes collaborations with Italy’s Elisa, Too Pure’s eclectic band Jack, and Portugal’s Hands On Approach, for whom he produced two albums. Additionally, he recorded tracks for Electronic, Mundy, Contempo, The Dum Dums, and Big Sur, showcasing his adaptability and skill.
In recent years, Allison has continued to expand his portfolio, working with BBMak and other emerging artists. As a skilled drummer, his understanding of arrangements and performance gives him a unique perspective in the studio, allowing him to draw out the best from artists, particularly those new to recording.
