Alan Moulder (born June 11, 1959) is a renowned British record producer, mixing engineer, and audio engineer who has been instrumental in shaping the sound of alternative rock and beyond. Over the past decades, he has solidified his reputation as a pivotal figure in both British and American rock music, seamlessly blending experimental techniques with contemporary production styles.
Moulder’s career began at London’s iconic Trident Studios, where he worked as an assistant alongside legendary producers such as Brian Eno and Chris Thomas. During this formative period, Moulder developed a penchant for experimental and electronic sounds, influenced by Eno’s innovative approaches. This foundation laid the groundwork for his later success as a producer and mixer, where his ability to merge raw energy with sonic clarity became his hallmark.
His connection to Eurythmics is particularly notable for his engineering contributions to their 1987 album Savage, which showcased the duo’s avant-garde approach to music. Additionally, Moulder worked on “Avenue D,” a collaboration between Etta James and Dave Stewart, bringing a unique flair through his remixing skills. His involvement extended to Dave Stewart’s Spiritual Cowboys albums, Dave Stewart & The Spiritual Cowboys and Honest, adding depth and polish to their distinctive sound. Beyond his work with Eurythmics, Moulder has collaborated with a wide range of influential artists and bands, including Jean Michel Jarre, Visage, Big Audio Dynamite, The Smiths, Erasure, Shakespears Sister, Boris Grebenshchikov, Toni Halliday, Pop Will Eat Itself, Bomb the Bass, Curve, Ride, Transvision Vamp, and My Bloody Valentine (Loveless). In the 1990s, his work on landmark albums such as Nine Inch Nails’ The Downward Spiral, The Smashing Pumpkins’ Siamese Dream and Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, and Ride’s Nowhere solidified his reputation as a pioneer in shoegaze and alternative rock. His contributions to these projects showcased his ability to handle complex, layered arrangements while maintaining a clear and powerful sound.
