I once served Dave an omelette when I worked at the World Cafe in Crouch Hill and I was squatting in London, in Kilburn and then Camden Town where Dave shot Dylan’s Blood in my Eyes video. I didn’t realize it at the time but he was with Bob Dylan (I’m just not a big fan but I am a big fan of yours and Dave’s) and when the other server told me who it was I asked Dave “Where’s Annie?”

Meeting a lifelong hero and finding they exceed your expectations is rare. This happened in 2011, when I met Annie. Her music, from Eurythmics to her solo work, has shaped my life since I first heard Love Is a Stranger in ’83. At Westminster Abbey for Commonwealth Day, where she spoke before the late Queen, I saw her and called out to her. She kindly stopped and we briefly chatted. After the service, we met again, and I expressed my gratitude for her profound impact on my life. Happy Birthday!!!

In a 2018 issue of Classic Pop magazine, Annie mentioned how she’d read a feature on the Eurythmics Savage album and that “One journalist wrote this wonderful piece about it, how it’s a masterpiece and how people never recognised it as the most extraordinary piece of music of its time.” She didn’t mention the journalist by name but I felt almost certain she was referring to my blog article, as I was the only one to pen something substantial for the album’s 30th anniversary a few months earlier. Well, tonight Matthew, when we met at Annie’s MassMoca show in AmericaI got the confirmation I was looking for. “Was that you? Steve? Wow. I loved it! You are a wonderful writer. There’s a real art to your use of words, it was like reading poetry. Thank you for writing it.” Of course, I was delighted beyond words. I cannot tell you how beautiful it was to hear such compliments from such a formidable singer songwriter. What a woman. What a role model. What an inspiration. Winifred Atwell’s ‘Let’s have another party’ was the Christmas #1 on the day you were born and that’s exactly what we’ll all be doing to celebrate 70 years of a woman with no limits but plenty to offer. In a sad coincidence, Winifred Atwell passed away on the 28th February 1983 – just as the phenomenal ‘Sweet dreams (are made of this)’ was ascending the charts and getting my 13yo brain into quite a stir! I can’t begin to count the ways in which your incredible music has shaped my life. When I needed comfort, albums like Savage, Diva, and Bare were there to nurse my wounds. When I needed a reminder of who I was, I could play “Sweet Dreams” and be transported to my childhood as that opening note explodes into millions of neon orange pixels and recall how it felt like it went right through me, like that sonic boom had been plucked straight out of my DNA. Happy birthday Annie, you have given me a lifetime of memories. You music helped me through so much in my life. Your speaking out for causes you believe in has helped me through incredibly bad times. In 1993, my eldest brother died of AIDS. It was a hard time for me. I find it impossible to pick 1 album or song as my favorite. Many happy returns to Annie on her 70th birthday! I have been a fan of the music since I was 17 years old (now 58). I became a dedicated activist and volunteer in my community due to a lyric that inspired me – “I’ve got a light, though it refuses to shine” – that really spoke to me and woke me up. Thank you Annie! Happy 70th Birthday Annie – I’ve been a huge fan since 1983 when I was 13 – Sweet Dreams remains my favourite song of all time ! I’ve been lucky to see you live in 1986 , 1999, 2019 in Glasgow and 2004 in London. I also saw you being interviewed by Muriel Gray in Edinburgh a good few years back. Wishing you and your family warm wishes on your birthday! Your songwriting, singing, and musical abilities have impacted my life since I was in high school. Your advocacy work and intelligent use of digital and social medias are so inspiring. It was your video sharing your vaccination during the pandemic that inspired me to convince my elderly parents to get theirs right away and thankfully they are still with me at soon to be ages 84 and 88. You are a role model on so many different levels! Dearest Annie, Since 1983 your music has been my constant companion, through both good times and bad. My friend, my joy and my solace. You have gifted me many of the best nights of my life, from Glasgow ’86, chatting with you on tour bus in Berlin 2003, Guildhall 2009 to LA RRHoF 2022. Next stop Royal Albert Hall. You are without doubt the most mesmerizing live performer I’ve ever seen. Annie thank you for USING your voice. It’s an honour to be able to wish you a Happy 70th birthday.

Happy birthday, Annie, may this day bring you 1000 beautiful things and all the joy you deserve. Thank you for all your beautiful music and moving songs, to which I keep turning as if to an old friend. Thank you for your integrity as an artist and activist. Your art and your voice, literal and figurative, have been with me since I was a teenager, and for that I am immensely grateful and happy.

At age 14 I joined the UK Eurythmics Fanclub. A few years ago I came across Ultimate Eurythmics archives and strolled through the digital versions of fanclub magazines I had once owned. I had a major shock – but what a joy – when I came across my name in a list wishing ME a Happy Birthday, my 15th in 1984. I had totally forgotten about it ! We were just a bunch of people at that time ! Today in 2024 I guess we are far far more than just a bunch wishing a very Happy 70th Birthday to ANNIE !!!

Thank you for being you. Thank you for showing me for over 40 years what true grace, strength and courage mean. I wanted to send you the first drawing I did of you, back when I was 9 in February of 1984. I know my 9-year-old self never imagined I’d be a 50-year-old woman finally getting to share this with you, but yet here I am, still the same little kid filled with wonder and awe whenever I hear your voice or watch one of your videos. Happy Birthday!

I had to give careful though as to why I’ve felt so connected to Annie Lennox’s artistry over the years. I can’t single out a single song or a moment that made me feel connected to her. My first Eurythmics album was “Touch”, my greatest concert moment was “Bare” live in Toronto in 2003. It boils down to this: I connect to her humanity, compassion and understanding of the human condition. It shines through when she sings, like in the photo I’ve chosen. Have the happiest of birthdays, Annie!

I am sure many here will tell you how much your music has meant to them — and I am no exception! No matter the subjects you were writing about in your songs, how much brighter and hopeful you made my life back then and now! I enclose my favorite image, taken on a train, which encapsulates some journey for you, your friends, as well as your many listeners. Have a wonderful birthday Annie! You’ve been a big part of my life since the age of nine, when you sashayed into my consciousness via the Would I Lie to You video on ToTP. Your whole attitude gave me the courage to be myself and not worry about being different. I finally saw you play live in 1999 when your voice moved me to tears. That was the first of many sublime experiences in your company (and your lovely Peeps – now lifelong friends) from London to Glasgow and even LA. Thank you so much!
