Valerie Simpson, born on August 26, 1946, in the Bronx, New York, is a celebrated songwriter, producer, and performer. She began her musical journey studying piano and composition, which laid the foundation for her illustrious career. Meeting Nickolas Ashford in 1964 marked the beginning of a lifelong partnership, both professionally and personally. Together, they penned some of the most iconic songs in Motown’s history, working with artists like Marvin Gaye, Tammi Terrell, and Diana Ross. Valerie’s talents extended beyond songwriting; her powerful voice and musicality shone in their performances as Ashford & Simpson. Their hits, including “Solid,” showcased their chemistry and artistry.
