Sir Thomas Malory was an English writer and knight, best known for his seminal work Le Morte d’Arthur, a compilation of Arthurian legends. Born around 1393 or 1425, his exact identity remains uncertain, though he is often associated with Thomas Malory of Newbold Revel in Warwickshire. Malory’s life was marked by periods of imprisonment, possibly for criminal acts or political reasons during the Wars of the Roses. It is believed that he wrote Le Morte d’Arthur while in prison, completing it in 1470.
Malory’s work is a reimagining of French and English Arthurian tales, chronicling the rise and fall of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. His narrative emphasises themes of chivalry, loyalty, and the tragic consequences of betrayal, departing from the courtly love focus of earlier versions. Le Morte d’Arthur was first published in 1485 by William Caxton, becoming a cornerstone of English literature and inspiring countless adaptations.
