Smokey Robinson, born William Robinson Jr. on 19 February 1940 in Detroit, Michigan, is an iconic American singer, songwriter, and producer. He is best known as the founder and frontman of The Miracles, one of Motown Records’ pioneering vocal groups. Smokey’s smooth tenor voice and exceptional songwriting skills helped define the sound of Motown, with hits like “The Tracks of My Tears,” “Shop Around,” and “You’ve Really Got a Hold on Me.”
In addition to his work with The Miracles, Smokey served as Motown’s vice president, contributing to the label’s success by mentoring other artists and writing songs for acts like Marvin Gaye and The Temptations. After leaving The Miracles in 1972, he embarked on a successful solo career, producing hits such as “Cruisin'” and “Being With You.”
Smokey’s influence on music has earned him numerous accolades, including induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song. At 85, he continues to perform and release music, showcasing his enduring talent and passion for the art.
