Sidney Sax (1913–2005) was a distinguished British violinist, orchestral leader, and contractor, celebrated for his significant contributions to classical and popular music. Born in London, Sax became a prominent figure in the music industry, known for his exceptional talent and versatility.
Sax co-founded the National Philharmonic Orchestra in 1964 alongside Charles Gerhardt. This freelance orchestra brought together some of the finest musicians from London’s leading orchestras, and it became renowned for its high-quality recordings and performances.
The National Philharmonic Orchestra worked on numerous notable projects, including collaborations with legendary conductors such as Leopold Stokowski and Bernard Herrmann. Sax’s leadership and vision played a pivotal role in the orchestra’s success.
In addition to his work with the National Philharmonic Orchestra, Sidney Sax was a member of the Ariel Quartet and contributed to various recordings and performances. He also worked under the pseudonym Josef Sakonov, recording solo violin pieces with the London Festival Orchestra.
Sax’s contributions extended to film soundtracks, where he played on scores for movies such as The Pink Panther Strikes Again, The Boys from Brazil, and Jesus of Nazareth. His work in this area showcased his ability to adapt to different musical styles and genres.
