Rick Kemp, born Frederick Stanley Kemp on 15 November 1941 in Little Hanford, Dorset, is an accomplished English musician, songwriter, and record producer. Best known as the bassist for the British folk-rock band Steeleye Span, Kemp has had a long and influential career in the music industry. Before joining Steeleye Span in 1972, he gained recognition as a session bassist, working with artists like Michael Chapman. His rock and blues background brought a distinctive edge to Steeleye Span’s sound, blending traditional folk with contemporary influences.
Kemp contributed significantly to Steeleye Span’s success, not only as a bassist but also as a songwriter and occasional vocalist. He co-wrote and arranged several tracks, including the melody for “London” from the album Rocket Cottage. After leaving the band in 1986 due to health and touring pressures, he continued collaborating with Steeleye Span’s lead vocalist, Maddy Prior, on various projects, including the Maddy Prior Band and their duo album Happy Families.
Kemp rejoined Steeleye Span in 2000 and remained an active member until his retirement in 2016. Since then, he has focused on solo projects, releasing albums such as Perfect Blue in 2018.
