Phil Chen (1946–2021) was a legendary Jamaican bassist celebrated for his versatility and immense contributions to the music industry. Born in Kingston, Jamaica, Chen grew up surrounded by the island’s vibrant musical culture, which shaped his distinctive style.
Chen’s career took off in the 1960s when he moved to London and became a sought-after session musician.
His basslines graced iconic tracks like Rod Stewart’s “Da Ya Think I’m Sexy?” and “Hot Legs,” as well as Jeff Beck’s groundbreaking albums Blow by Blow and Wired.
Notably, Chen contributed his bass expertise to Eurythmics’ acclaimed album Revenge (1986). His work on tracks such as “I Remember You” and “The Last Time” added depth and groove to the band’s evolving rock sound. Chen also joined Eurythmics for select live performances, showcasing his dynamic stage presence.
Throughout his career, Chen collaborated with a stellar lineup of artists, including Pete Townshend, Eric Clapton, Ray Charles, and Bob Marley. In 2004, he joined Ray Manzarek and Robby Krieger of The Doors in their reformation project, further cementing his legacy as a versatile and innovative bassist.
Phil Chen’s contributions to music earned him the Jamaican Order of Distinction in 2014, a testament to his enduring impact.
