PETER THOMAS is active as classical guitarist, composer and synthesist. Dividing his time equally between the traditional classical repertoire and original music, he appears regularly in concert as a soloist and in small ensembles.
An experienced solo guitar recitalist, Peter has given concerts on both coasts. Creatively weaving together selections from a wide-ranging repertoire covering over 500 years of music, his concerts feature music in the Renaissance, Baroque and Spanish styles, works by contemporary Northwest composers and his own guitar compositions. With an open and relaxed stage presence, Peters lively spoken commentaries on the lives, times and works of composers provide a context that enhances an audiencess appreciation of his interpretations.
Active in the realm of chamber music, Peter has been involved in three long-term performing collaborations: Aeolia, a flute and classical guitar duo; Speechless, a percussion and guitar duo, focusing on improvisation; and Mythic Sky, a four-piece ensemble fusing acoustic and electronic sounds in original compositions and improvisations to which Peter contributes his skills as composer and keyboard synthesist. Along with these long-term collaborations Peter has also appeared in concert as an accompanist to performers on voice, violin, recorders and bassoon.
As a recording artist Peter has released three albums which document his work as both composer and performer. The just-released CD Confluence features classical and original music for solo guitar. The 1988 release Tradition and Imagination contains one side of music by John Dowland, S.L. Weiss and their contemporaries and one side of original compositions. The Hours Away is a one-hour recording of Peters electronic music. Peter also composed and performed the music for the nationally distributed video production In Shadow and Light on the life and work of artist Maxfield Parrish.
