Matthew Fisher, born on March 7, 1946, in Addiscombe, Croydon, England, is an English musician, songwriter, and record producer. He is best known for his association with the rock band Procol Harum, where his Hammond organ performance on the iconic 1967 single “A Whiter Shade of Pale” became legendary. Fisher later won a songwriting credit for his contribution to the song’s composition.
Fisher’s musical journey began in his teens, initially playing bass guitar before transitioning to the organ. He studied classical music at the Guildhall School of Music but left to pursue a career in rock music. Before joining Procol Harum, he played with various bands, including Peter Jay and the Jaywalkers and Screaming Lord Sutch’s backing group, The Savages.
In addition to his work with Procol Harum, Fisher produced their third album, A Salty Dog, and pursued solo projects. Later in life, he became a computer programmer, showcasing his versatility beyond music.
