More Information

Liam Ó Maonlaí is an Irish singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist best known as the charismatic frontman of Hothouse Flowers, a band he co-founded in 1985 with schoolmate Fiachna Ó Braonáin. Born in Monkstown, County Dublin in 1964, Ó Maonlaí grew up immersed in Irish language and culture, attending Gaelscoileanna and winning an All-Ireland under-18 award for bodhrán playing. His deep respect for tradition has always infused his music with spiritual and cultural resonance.
With Hothouse Flowers, Ó Maonlaí helped pioneer a sound that fused rock, soul, gospel, and traditional Irish music. Their debut album People (1988) became the most successful debut in Irish chart history, and their live performances earned a reputation for emotional intensity and musical virtuosity. His expressive vocals and piano work remain central to the band’s identity.
Beyond the Flowers, Ó Maonlaí has pursued solo projects that explore Irish folk and global musical traditions. His 2005 solo album Rían is a collection of songs in Irish, and his 2008 documentary Dambé: The Mali Project chronicles a 3,000-mile musical journey through West Africa, blending Irish and Malian sounds in a celebration of cross-cultural connection.
A passionate advocate for peace and environmental causes, Ó Maonlaí has performed at benefit concerts and collaborated with artists around the world. His music is not just entertainment—it’s a reflection of heritage, humanity, and heart.
