Lenny Pickett (born April 10, 1954, in Las Cruces, New Mexico, USA) is an acclaimed American saxophonist, composer, and arranger, celebrated for his innovative techniques and contributions to funk, R&B, and pop music.
Pickett began his career in the early 1970s as a member of the horn section for Tower of Power, a pioneering funk band from Oakland, California. His high-register saxophone playing and inventive arrangements helped shape the band’s distinctive sound. During his time with Tower of Power, he performed on iconic albums such as Back to Oakland and Urban Renewal.
In 1985, Pickett joined the Saturday Night Live Band, where he has served as the musical director since 1995. His work on SNL has made him a household name, with his saxophone solos becoming a signature element of the show’s opening theme.
Beyond his work with Tower of Power and SNL, Pickett has collaborated with a wide range of artists, including Elton John, David Bowie, Talking Heads, and Bruce Springsteen. Notably, he worked with Dave Stewart on the album Greetings From the Gutter (1995), contributing his saxophone expertise to tracks like “Damien Save Me.” This collaboration highlighted his ability to adapt to diverse musical styles and projects.
Pickett’s contributions to music extend to education, as he serves as a faculty member at New York University’s Steinhardt School of Music. His teaching focuses on saxophone performance and composition, inspiring the next generation of musicians.
