Lee Thornburg is an American trumpeter, trombonist, and arranger whose dynamic horn work has powered some of the most iconic bands in rock and soul. Born in Danville, Kentucky, and trained at the Manhattan School of Music, Thornburg’s career took off in the 1970s when he toured with Wayne Cochran and the C.C. Riders. His versatility and bold brass tone quickly made him a sought-after session and touring musician.
Thornburg became a key member of Tower of Power, contributing to their signature horn-driven funk sound. He also played with Supertramp, adding punch and precision to their live shows and recordings. His resume includes collaborations with Ray Charles, Bonnie Raitt, Aaron Neville, Huey Lewis, and Tom Petty, among others—each benefiting from his soulful phrasing and tight arrangements.
