Jonathan Chandra Pandy, known professionally as JC001, is a multifaceted artist whose career spans music, poetry, and voice artistry.
Born in 1966 and raised in the vibrant Notting Hill/Ladbroke Grove area of London, his Anglo-Indian and Irish heritage has deeply influenced his creative journey.
JC001 emerged in the early 1980s, immersing himself in London’s burgeoning rap and electro scenes.
His unique style and talent led him to collaborate with live bands, broadening his musical perspective.
By the mid-1980s, he was actively involved in the West London breakdance scene as an MC, honing his skills and gaining recognition.
A pivotal moment in his career came when he signed with Dave Stewart’s Anxious Records label in the late 1980s.
During this time, he released impactful singles like “Never Again,” a rap against racism featuring The Specials’ “Ghost Town” hook, and “Favorite Breaks” with DJ D-Zire.
His album “Ride the Break,” released under Anxious/EastWest and Interscope labels, showcased his eclectic style and featured collaborations with notable artists like George Clinton and the J.B.’s.
Beyond his solo work, JC001 toured with Shakespears Sister and collaborated with various artists, including Dave Stewart, Curve, Boy George, and the French band Le Peuple de l’Herbe, further highlighting his adaptability and talent.
He also achieved a Guinness World Record for being the fastest rapper, delivering 631 syllables per minute.
