John McKenzie (1955–2020) was a highly accomplished British bass guitarist whose career spanned five decades, leaving an indelible mark on the music industry.
Born on November 10, 1955, in Paddington, London, McKenzie was celebrated for his versatility, effortlessly navigating genres from rock and pop to jazz and soul. He began his career in the 1970s with the Global Village Trucking Company, a band known for its communal lifestyle and extended live performances. He later joined the rock band Man, contributing to their album The Welsh Connection and touring extensively.
In the 1980s, McKenzie became a sought-after session musician, working with a dazzling array of artists. His collaborations included Eurythmics, where he played bass on hits like “Thorn in My Side,” “When Tomorrow Comes,” and “The Miracle of Love” from their Revenge album. His contributions added depth and groove to the band’s sound, cementing his reputation as a world-class bassist. McKenzie also worked with The Pretenders, Alison Moyet, Bob Dylan, and Wham!, among many others.
