In the vibrant New York City music scene, Jeff Slate stands out as a world-class frontman and songwriter. His band’s monthly residency in the heart of Chelsea draws sellout crowds and attracts famous guests. However, reaching this coveted place as part of New York’s cultural firmament was no easy feat for Slate.
During the mid-1980s US East Coast post-punk scene, Slate emerged as a prominent figure, performing at legendary clubs like CBGBs with his band, the Mindless Thinkers. It was at a drunken aftershow party where Steve Jones of the Sex Pistols christened them with their name. As the lead singer, guitarist, and principal songwriter, Slate made his mark.
By the early ’90s, Slate embarked on a solo career and gained recognition after collaborating with Pete Townshend of The Who. He further solidified his reputation by touring with Sheryl Crow and founding the mod-influenced band, The Badge. Inspired by legendary acts such as The Kinks, The Who, and the Small Faces, The Badge released three albums and several singles, EPs, and live recordings before going on hiatus.
Slate’s solo releases over the years have featured an impressive lineup of famous friends and A-list session players. His songs have found their way into advertising, films, and television shows, including the popular series Gossip Girl. In his 13 years of touring across the US, Slate has shared the stage with renowned artists like Roger McGuinn, Jeff Tweedy, Willie Nile, Margo Price, and Sheryl Crow. He has also headlined prestigious festivals like the Switchyard Festival at Cain’s Ballroom in Tulsa and Tom Petty Weekend in Gainesville, Florida, the late artist’s hometown. Notably, Slate has even participated as an all-star counselor at the acclaimed Rock and Roll Fantasy Camp.
Apart from his musical pursuits, Slate is a regular guest host on SiriusXM and co-authored the 2017 book “The Authorized Roy Orbison” with the late legend’s sons. He has written liner notes for iconic albums by artists like Orbison, The Beatles, Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, and Jimi Hendrix. In a rare occurrence, Slate had the privilege of interviewing Bob Dylan, an opportunity granted to only a select few this century.
Adding another exciting chapter to his musical journey, Slate’s fourth solo album, “The Last Day of Summer,” features collaborations with Dave Stewart, Duff McKagan, Earl Slick, members of Paul Weller’s band, and Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds. The album, set to be released on May 17th via Schnitzel Records, showcases the collective genius of these talented musicians. Notably, the album’s striking photo shoot was captured by the renowned rock photographer Bob Gruen.
Throughout his career, Jeff Slate’s path has been enriched by his collaborations with the incredibly talented Dave Stewart and a host of other esteemed artists. With each project and performance, he continues to leave an indelible mark on the music industry.
