Janusz Janowski is a Polish painter, jazz drummer and art theorist, born in Połczyn-Zdrój in 1965. He studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk, graduating in 1994, and has since become a prominent figure in the city’s cultural life. His visual art explores themes of memory, identity and abstraction, and he has exhibited widely in solo and group shows across Poland and Europe. He co-founded the artistic collective Stowarzyszenie Malarzy and initiated the annual exhibition series Ocalić od zapomnienia (“To Save from Oblivion”), which celebrates regional painters and their contributions to Polish art.
Janowski is also an accomplished jazz musician, having performed in ensembles such as European Sextett and Nowy Kwartet, and participated in the European Projects for Young Artists – Germinations Europe. His 1998 recording Suita Europejska was released in Germany and reflects his interest in cross-cultural musical dialogue. Beyond his creative work, Janowski has served as president of the Gdańsk branch of the Association of Polish Painters and Designers (ZPAP) since 2006, and co-edited the Polish edition of Donald Kuspit’s The End of Art. His career bridges visual and sonic disciplines, making him a unique voice in contemporary Polish culture.
