Beverlei Brown is a British R&B and soul singer celebrated for her powerful voice and dynamic performances. Born and raised in Birmingham, England, Brown honed her singing skills in her church’s choir, where she eventually became the leader. Her early exposure to gospel music laid the foundation for her career, and she gained recognition after performing a solo with the Clark Sisters during their UK concert.
Brown’s career took off when she joined Fine Young Cannibals as a gospel singer for their album project, which led to a worldwide promotional tour. She later toured with Ruby Turner for two years, further establishing her reputation as a talented vocalist. Over the years, Brown has worked with a diverse array of artists, including Simply Red, Snap!, Joe Cocker, the Brand New Heavies, Babyface, and Chaka Khan, showcasing her versatility across genres.
Her connection to Dave Stewart and Eurythmics includes providing backing vocals on a couple of Dave Stewart’s solo singles. Brown’s contributions to these projects highlight her ability to adapt her soulful style to different musical contexts.
In 1996, Brown released the UK club hit “On and On,” which marked her debut as a solo artist. Although her first album went unreleased due to the record company’s closure, she signed with Dome Records in 1998 and released her debut album Next to You. The album featured six co-written tracks and a duet with labelmate Dennis Taylor, earning popularity in Japan and the UK.
