My musical life started at the age of 6 when I began to study Classical Piano. By the age of 13, I had changed over to continue on the Classical Organ. On turning 19, I moved back to the Piano and started to work in earnest at my music studies.
While playing in pub and club rock and jazz bands, my studies in Piano and Orchestration continued and I took my Diplomas at The Royal Academy of Music and The Royal College of Music, gaining both Teaching (LRAM) and Concert Pianist (ARCM) Awards. On finishing, I started to lecture music at colleges teaching both Piano and Music Theory. But in 1978 all this changed. I left education after an offer to join the band THE STRAWBS, stepping into the keyboard shoes of Rick Wakeman.
After the demise of The Strawbs I started doing sessions: albums, singles and jingles, and also worked as a live keyboard player with artists such as MADDY PRIOR (Steeleye Span) and DENNY LAINE (Wings).
In 1983, I produced an album for an independent record label in Stoke-on-Trent, UK and it was mixed by Julian Mendelsohn, the house engineer at Sarm East. Later that year, Trevor Horn, looking for a new keyboard player / programmer to work with, asked Julian if he could recommend anyone. Julian suggested that Trevor give me a ring ......
