Andy Richards is a multifaceted keyboardist, composer, producer, and programmer whose diverse career has been defined by technical expertise and musical innovation. Starting his musical journey at age 6 with Classical Piano studies, Richards transitioned to Classical Organ at 13 and later returned to the Piano at 19, deepening his dedication to music. He earned Teaching (LRAM) and Concert Pianist (ARCM) diplomas from prestigious institutions like The Royal Academy of Music and The Royal College of Music, before embarking on a career that shaped the sound of numerous iconic albums and performances.
Richards initially balanced his love for music with teaching piano and music theory. However, his career took a transformative turn in 1978 when he joined the progressive rock band The Strawbs, stepping into the role previously held by legendary keyboardist Rick Wakeman. Following the band’s dissolution, Richards entered the world of session work, lending his skills to albums, singles, jingles, and live tours with artists like Maddy Prior (Steeleye Span) and Denny Laine (Wings).
His breakthrough in production came in 1983 when he produced an album for an independent record label in Stoke-on-Trent, UK, collaborating with Julian Mendelsohn, then the house engineer at Sarm East Studios. Richards’ talent caught the attention of Trevor Horn, the acclaimed producer, who sought a keyboard player and programmer to join his team. Richards quickly became a trusted collaborator, working alongside Horn on ground-breaking projects such as Frankie Goes to Hollywood’s Welcome to the Pleasuredome, Grace Jones’ Slave to the Rhythm, and Pet Shop Boys’ It’s a Sin.
Richards’ work extended to Annie Lennox’s 1995 album Medusa, where his keyboard contributions added layers of emotional depth to tracks like No More “I Love You’s” and A Whiter Shade of Pale. His influence on Medusa demonstrated his ability to adapt his skills to complement Lennox’s distinct artistry. In addition to music, Richards expanded into film scoring, contributing to soundtracks for Oscar-winning films like Slumdog Millionaire and 127 Hours.
Renowned for his innovative programming techniques, Richards’ ability to craft atmospheric and dynamic sounds has earned him recognition as one of the most accomplished figures in contemporary music production.
