Annie Lennox : 100 BEAUTIFUL SONGS
Number 9 : A Thousand Beautiful Things by Annie Lennox from Bare in 2003

A Thousand Beautiful Things –- Overall, Annie’s 2003 album, Bare isn’t a happy romp. Too much angst, perhaps, was a bitter pill for Annie to swallow, so she opened the album with this declaration of hope. “Every day I write the list,” she begins. “Of reasons why I still believe they do exist/ A thousand beautiful things/And even though it’s hard to see/ The glass is full and not half-empty.” Released as a single, the song was one of three Bare tracks to hit No. 1 on Billboard’s Dance Charts in various club mixes.

Every day I write the list
Of reasons why I still believe they do exist
(A thousand beautiful things)
And even though it’s hard to see
The glass is full and hot half empty
(A thousand beautiful things)
So? light me up like the sun
To cool down with your rain
I never want to close my eyes again
Never close my eyes
Never close my eyes
I thank you for the air to breathe
The heart to beat, the eyes to see again
(A thousand beautiful things)
And all the things that’s been and done
The battle’s won
The good and bad in everyone
(This is mine to remember)
So? here I go again
(Here I go)
Singin’ by your window
(Singing)
Pickin’ up the pieces of what’s left to find
(to find, to find, to find)
(picking up picking up)
The world was meant for you and me
To figure out our destiny
To live
To die
To breathe
To sleep
To try to make your life complete
(Yea Yea)
So ?light me up like the sun
(light me up just like the sun)
To cool down with your rain
(cool me down with the rain)
I never want to close my eyes again
Never close my eyes
never close my eyes ?
That is all I have to say
(That’s all I have to say)
The small ray of optimism, on an otherwise dark album, “A Thousand Beautiful Things,” the second single of 2003’s Bare, and the second shortest song on the album, makes our #9 slot in our Poll. “Everyday I write the list of reasons why I do exist,” starts this masterpiece, almost shedding light on the actual work behind finding happiness. “I remember,” as if only fleeting moments of happiness can be found, but they do exist. As we move from this short, but really deep, number, we find an emotionally charged album, full of sadness, loneliness and despair. “A Thousand Beautiful Things,” becomes somewhat of our seatbelt, as we prepare for and go through the ride. A safety net we can return to when it all just becomes too much. As is life.
