Nena, born Gabriele Susanne Kerner in Hagen, Germany in 1960, is one of the most successful German pop singers of all time. She rose to international fame in 1983 as the lead vocalist of the band Nena, whose single “99 Luftballons” became a global hit. The English version, “99 Red Balloons,” topped the UK charts and reached No. 2 in the US. The band released four albums before disbanding in 1987, after which Nena launched a solo career.
Her 1989 solo album Wunder gescheh’n marked a turning point, and she continued to release music throughout the 1990s. In 2002, she revived her career with Nena feat. Nena, re-recording her classic hits with updated production. The duet “Anyplace, Anywhere, Anytime” with Kim Wilde became a European hit. Nena has sold over 25 million records and remains a cultural icon in Germany.
