Full Biography
Herbie Hancock is an American jazz pianist, composer, and bandleader whose career has spanned more than six decades. Born in Chicago in 1940, Hancock was a child prodigy who performed Mozart with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra at the age of 11. He rose to prominence in the 1960s as a member of Miles Davis’s Second Great Quintet, helping to shape the post-bop sound and redefining the role of the rhythm section in jazz.
Hancock’s solo work has been equally influential. His 1973 album Head Hunters fused jazz with funk and became one of the best-selling jazz records of all time. In the 1980s, he embraced electronic music with the hit single “Rockit,” which won a Grammy and introduced turntablism to a wider audience. He has won 14 Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year for River: The Joni Letters, and an Academy Award for his score to Round Midnight. Hancock continues to perform and record, and his legacy as a pioneer of jazz fusion and electronic experimentation remains unmatched.
