Bitter Sweet is a distinctive orchestral project in which Bryan Ferry reinterprets songs from his solo catalogue and Roxy Music through the sound and style of 1920s and 1930s jazz. Performed with his orchestra, the album draws on early cinema, Art Deco elegance, and pre war dance music, using muted brass, sweeping strings, and period instrumentation to reveal new depth and atmosphere. The lead track, Alphaville, was originally released on Ferry’s 2010 album Olympia and was co written with Dave Stewart, one of three collaborations between the two on that album. On Bitter Sweet, the song is transformed into a slow burning, cabaret styled piece that fits seamlessly within the album’s vintage aesthetic.
