Dave Stewart Returns to Soho in New Video for “The Way It Was Back Then”
Dave Stewart has unveiled the official video for "The Way It Was Back Then", the title track and first single from his forthcoming album, due for release on 30th October.
The beautifully shot video follows Dave on a continuous walk through the streets of Soho, revisiting many of the locations that helped shape his early musical journey. As he walks through London's most famous creative quarter, the song's themes of memory, friendship, lost time and changing circumstances are brought vividly to life.
Opening with the wistful lines:
"I want to hear that sound, of you knocking on my door. And I want to know, yes, I wonder, if you'd ever come back for more?"
the song reflects on people, places and moments that can never quite be recreated. As the chorus reminds us:
"Nothing's gonna work out the way it did back then."
Rather than dwelling on the past, the song feels more like an acceptance that life moves forward, while the memories remain. That sentiment runs throughout both the lyrics and the video itself.
The accompanying film was directed and filmed by Kyle Wilkinson and his creative studio HAUS OF THRILLS™.
Kyle has worked closely with Dave and the RARE team for a number of years as a trusted creative collaborator and consultant. Drawing on his experience across music, film and art direction, he worked alongside the team to bring the video's visual concept to life.

"This video, filmed on the streets of Soho brings back many memories of playing the Marquee Club and staying up all night drinking espressos at Bar Italia to stay awake and see the dawn with other Merry Pranksters as well as other adventures in freedom."
