Throwback Tech: When Tomorrow’s World Used a copy of a Eurythmics Touch CD to Demonstrate CD Fragility… Then Switched to Dire Straits for the First Car CD Player (BBC Archive, 1984)

In October 1984, the BBC’s Tomorrow’s World showcased a breakthrough that would eventually change how we listened to music on the move. To demonstrate how delicate early compact disc players were, presenter Peter Macann reached for a copy of Eurythmics’ Touch, giving Annie and Dave the honour of soundtracking the studio test. Once he moved to the big reveal, the first CD player that could survive the bumps and shakes of a car, the music switched to Dire Straits, the disc chosen for the in‑car demonstration.

It is a brilliant little time capsule, now resurfaced through the BBC Archive, and it perfectly blends the pop culture of the moment with the excitement of emerging tech.
