"The Need To Rebel Will Never Go Away"
For decades, The Long Way Home has been one of those legendary films that fans could only dream of seeing again. Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Michael Apted, this documentary takes us back to 1988 and follows Boris Grebenshchikov, the godfather of Russian rock, on his extraordinary journey to the West to record an album and bring it home during the hopeful days of Glasnost.
What makes this film so exciting for Eurythmics fans is the incredible lineup of appearances. Alongside Boris and his band Aquarium, we see Dave Stewart playing a key role in the creative process, with special appearances by Annie Lennox, Chrissie Hynde, Ray Cooper, and Crosby, Stills & Nash. It’s a fascinating snapshot of collaboration and cultural exchange at a time when the world was opening up in new ways.
Now, for the first time in over 30 years, The Long Way Home has been remastered in stunning 4K and expanded with an epilogue co-directed by Steven Lawrence and Susanne Rostock (the film’s original producer and editor). This new section brings Boris’s story up to date, including his exile from Russia for speaking out against the invasion of Ukraine. It’s a powerful reminder of how music and art continue to challenge boundaries and speak truth to power.
Why This Matters for Eurythmics Fans
This film is more than a documentary, it’s a time capsule of creativity. Seeing Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart in this context is a rare treat. Their involvement shows just how far-reaching their influence was, and how open they were to collaborating on projects that broke down cultural barriers. Annie’s presence adds a touch of elegance and strength, while Dave’s inventive approach to sound helped shape the sessions in ways that only he could. For fans, these moments are pure gold.
