If you’re into Eurythmics and love seeing how their album artwork came together, then you really should be following Laurence Stevens on Instagram. He’s the designer behind many of the band’s most iconic covers, and this week he’s posted something rather special, an unseen mock-up for Be Yourself Tonight.
The design features a vintage Polaroid taken by Dave Stewart, snapped straight off a TV monitor at RCA Records in London. It was March 1985, and the “Would I Lie To You?” video was being shown to the label for the very first time. Dave captured the moment, and Laurence used one of those Polaroids to create one of eight alternative layouts for the album sleeve.
He explains that the mock-up was made for Dave and Annie using an acetate overlay with Helvetica Neue 85 Heavy type. That overlay was placed on top of a colour Xerox of the Polaroid. It’s a brilliant example of how design was done back then, mixing analogue techniques with early digital tools. Laurence even mentions that the coloured type on the acetate was considered quite futuristic at the time.
It’s fascinating to see how this version gives off a completely different feel. The screen-based layout echoes the earlier, more experimental Eurythmics era. At the same time, the music on Be Yourself Tonight marked a shift towards a softer, more soulful sound. That contrast is part of what makes the design so interesting. It still holds the emotional depth and edge that defined the duo’s work.
Laurence designed the final printed sleeve, but it’s these behind-the-scenes glimpses that really show the thought and creativity that went into each release.
You can follow him on Instagram to see more of his work. He regularly shares rare artwork, unused concepts, and stories from the studio. If you’re a fan of Annie Lennox, Dave Stewart, or Eurythmics, it’s well worth a look.
