Annie Lennox recorded her new version of Why in Palma, Majorca at Palma Music Studios and the studio documented the recording on video.
As we now know, Annie Lennox recently returned to one of her most powerful solo songs, Why, re-recording it with a new verse that reflects the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. The updated version has already been released, but now fans can take a closer look at how it came together thanks to a behind-the-scenes video from Palma Music Studios in Majorca.
The video offers a rare glimpse into the recording process, showing Annie seated at a grand piano inside the studio. It’s the same piano that studio founder Fredrik’s father once traded for a jacuzzi in the early 1980s. Annie’s manager had reached out to the studio to arrange a stripped-back session for a charity concert, and the team kept the setup simple and elegant.
The recording used Coles ribbon microphones on the piano, a vintage U47 for Annie’s vocals, and ambient ceiling mics to capture the room’s natural sound. There were no overdubs or studio tricks. Just Annie, the piano, and the moment.
In the video, Annie shares her thoughts on the experience:
“I’ve had a wonderful time. We’ve been recording on this beautiful piano and I’m really, really delighted to have found such a special place to come and record. I highly recommend it.”
The studio team reflected on the session as one of the most memorable they’ve ever hosted. Annie’s presence and performance reminded them why they built the space in the first place — to capture real, meaningful moments.
