A vibrant new mural celebrating Sunderland’s rich musical heritage is nearing completion at Sunniside, capturing the attention and admiration of passersby. Once an unremarkable corner building, it now bursts with color and character, showcasing icons from the city’s illustrious music scene. The mural features prominent figures such as R&B singer-songwriter Emeli Sandé, Eurythmics legend Dave Stewart, and the folk-inspired Lake Poets, reflecting the eclectic sounds that have emerged from Sunderland.

Local artists Frank Styles, Danny Fada, and Kathryn Roberson have collaborated on this ambitious project. Frank, renowned for his remarkable murals across the city, has once again brought his exceptional talent to this new masterpiece. His past works include tributes to SAFC greats and other important figures from Sunderland’s history. Adding her touch to the mural, Kathryn Roberson, an illustrator exploring a new medium, draws from her experience working alongside Frank. She previously created a striking mural on High Street West depicting Faye Fantarrow, a gifted young artist from East Herrington who sadly passed away earlier this year. The latest mural also includes a heartfelt homage to Faye, painted by Danny Fada.

Incorporating elements beloved by local music enthusiasts, the mural nods to iconic punk band Slalom D and references Dead Wet Things. A unique feature of the artwork is a dedicated space left at the bottom where musicians can post their event posters and album launches, providing a valuable platform for Sunderland’s numerous bands. TOWN organization, through We Make Culture, commissioned the mural, responding to the vibrant music community’s need for such a space.

Kathryn expressed her excitement about contributing more public artwork to Sunniside and appreciated the mentorship she received from Frank. This mural not only honors Sunderland’s musical history but also fosters a sense of community and creativity, inviting both artists and locals to celebrate the city’s dynamic cultural landscape.
