Former Spiritual Cowboys member John Turnbull to auction one of Dave Stewart’s old blue Takamine guitars at Bonhams auctioneers on 16th November in London.

This happens to be my favourite guitar that Dave plays, and probably most famous in the video for Lily Was Here with Candy dulfer as well as many Eurythmics performances.

John Turnbull who was in the Spiritual Cowboys is selling this guitar along with others at Bonhams auction house on 16th November.  This particular guitar was gifted to John at the end of a Spiritual Cowboys Tour.

“I bought many other different kinds but none of them matched [Takamine]…”
– Dave Stewart on the Takamine brand

This Takamine guitar was in the collection of Eurythmics member Dave Stewart, a friend of John Turnbull’s since 1978 and for a time a neighbour at Crouch End, North London. Stewart is a name closely associated with Takamine, often recording or performing with blue Takamine guitars including for the writing of multiple Eurythmics and Spiritual Cowboys tracks.

Turnbull and Stewart are long-time collaborators, with Turnbull appearing as a guest guitarist on the Eurythmics album and US chart-topping title track from ‘Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)’. On hiatus from Eurythmics, Dave Stewart formed a supergroup with Turnbull called The Spiritual Cowboys, the line-up for which also included Martin Chambers of The Pretenders. The Spiritual Cowboys released two albums and toured extensively between 1990 and 1991. At the end of their final tour, Dave Stewart gifted the present blue Takamine and a Hofner Vintage Club 40 guitar to Turnbull as thanks for his involvement in the band. Stewart’s love for blue Takamine guitars is well documented, appearing in a 1991 advert for Takamine and buying another identical model in 1993.
