“Would I Lie to You?” (Eurythmics)

My friends know what’s in store

I won’t be here anymore

I’ve packed my bags, I’ve cleaned the floor

Watch me walking, walking out the door

Balancing each other in romantic relationships can be very difficult, but when the loved one shows all his/hers iniquities shamelessly, that’s often the last straw: “Tell you straight, no intervention; to your face, no deception: you’re the biggest fake, that much is true; had all I can take, now I’m leaving you”. Breaking up is a bold and hugely liberating decision, but hurting too; its harshness can be relieved with the support of good pals: “My friends know what’s in store, I won’t be here anymore: I’ve packed my bags, I’ve cleaned the floor; watch me walking, walking out the door”.

“Would I Lie to You?” was the opener and lead single of Be Yourself Tonight, Eurythmics’ fourth studio album released in 1985.
